Mary Macbeth (メアリー・マクベス, Meari Makubesu), otherwise known by her nickname White (ホワイト, Howaito), is the daughter of Benjamin and Emma MacBeth and the younger twin sister of Black. She is a mysterious girl who befriended Leonardo Watch after he recovered from his injury, and he began to see her regularly at the hospital she was seemingly confined to.

In the Season 1 finale, it is revealed that White is not human, but one of the many barriers holding back the Great Collapse from happening again. The reason for her still being on the Earth is by her parents' sacrifice to make her part of the barriers. White sacrifices herself to completely reseal the Great Collapse, as the rest had been destroyed by the King of Despair. zthough she dies at the climax of the first season, the second season strongly implies that her spirit is watching out for Leo.

She is voiced by Rie Kugimiya, and by Megan Emerick in the English dub. White is an anime-only character and does not appear in the manga.

White is a seemingly young girl with pale skin and green eyes. She has her hair up in two long blonde pigtails. She wears what could be assumed as a hospital gown with black cuffs and collars, with a slit running from her knee down to the end of the dress.

She gets along quite well with her brother Black as seen in Episode 6. Black have stated in Episode 7 that she's a tomboy, headstrong and selfish sometimes.

History[]

Lil girl

White as a little girl

White is the youngest child of Benjamin and Emma Macbeth and the younger twin sister of William MacBeth. Despite coming from a long lineage of psychics, White didn't inherit any psychic powers, but her brother had both of their abilities combined. Despite this, her parents didn't treat her any differently from her brother, which caused White to feel miserable and unlucky, believing she was a blemish on her family. However, she often watched as Black refused to use his powers, never understanding why. She took up photography as a hobby, thinking that even if she would die, she would leave a trace of herself behind.

She loans the camera to a trio of kids from her school and they throw it in a river, destroying it. This caused Black to jump in after it and almost drown, having to be admitted to the hospital. As they are in the hospital, White tells him that the camera was simply a "placebo" and how much she would have grieved if he would die and starts to cry, causing Black to do the same.

During the Great Collapse, White's family was summoned to help the Casters of the world create a barrier around Hellsalem's Lot. White was killed during the event, and her parents used their abilities to revive her. After reviving White, her parents sacrificed themselves to form the barrier around the city, telling Black to take care of his sister before they died.

Plot[]

Episode 2[]

Although White has a cameo in Episode 1, she makes her official debut in Episode 2.[1] Leo encounters her in the hospital graveyard, finding her sitting on a large cross-like grave. White cheerfully introduces herself and tells Leo that she's a ghost.

Episode 3[]

Leo visits her at the end of Episode 3, where he shows her his many photographs. White greatly enjoys Leo's photos, telling him that she's been trapped in a hospital for three years and is only able to speak with her older brother, so seeing his pictures is almost as good as leaving the building.[2]

Episode 4[]

She is approached by The King of Despair in Episode 4, and he comments on a photo she is holding which was shot by Leonardo.

Episode 5[]

White hugging Leo

White hugging Leo

She is seen again in Episode 5, where she's mad at Leo for unknown reasons. Later, Leo sneaks White out of the hospital to go see a movie. During the movie, White begins to cry. While Leo tries to calm her down, he then talk about how much he also miss his sister. He says that he isn't a great brother since he only cause problems for her. White denies that saying that isn't true. She then comes closer to Leo and hugs him.

Episode 6[]

Introduction

Episode 11[]

She then left the church, walk around the city while feeling depressed and ends up at the place where Leo brings her out to watch a movie. She sat there while looking at some of the pictures in Leo's camera. Sonic then showed up looking for Leo, and later on, White started to feel a pain in her chest. While having a heart attack, she gives Sonic a mission to find Leo and save him. Later on, The King of Despair is seen holding White on his lap, within the church. He then decides to point a gun at her heart and shoots her. He whispers "Farewell, Mother Mary," followed by "I loved you."

Episode 12[]

Mary shot-0

During the beginning of episode 12, it is revealed that White had died three years earlier and her parents implanted a barricade into her, replacing her heart. She was then used as a nonhuman force to protect Hellsalem's Lot.

Farewell

She appears as a ghost when Leo finds her. He tells her he knows her secret and that they would go save the world together. She later sacrifices the remainder of her life to be a part of the barricade in Hellsalem's Lot and stop the destruction of the city. She tells Black that the world would not disappear without her, and she'd been able to survive the past three years because of their parents' love. Her spirit becomes a shining butterfly, kisses Leo, and flies away.

Power and Abilities[]

Unique Abilities[]

  • Gate Manifestation: Despite being a descendant of a lineage of psychics, White has no particular powers. However, she was severely injured during the Great Collapse, and with her parents powers became the key of the gateway of the city, to keep her alive. It also seems she may have some power over the force field seeing that a fog was created after her death which slowed The King Of Despair down.

Creation and Development[]

Creation[]

Anime director Rie Matsumoto found issues with adapting the Blood Blockade Battlefront manga due to its narrative lacking an overreaching structure. As a result, she used Leonardo's and Michella's relationship as a basis in the first anime adaptation. This led to the creation of the siblings White and Black, who would meet Leonardo as friends and be involved in a conflict in the adaptation's climax. Yasuhiro Nightow give his approval when heard of this storyline.

White and her family are based on the titular family from William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Macbeth,, first published in the Folio of 1623 and presumably first performed in 1606. In the play, a brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to violence by his wife, Macbeth murders the king and takes the Scottish throne for himself. Then, racked with guilt and paranoia, he commits more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, soon becoming a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath swiftly takes Macbeth and his wife towards madness and death.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese dub, White and Black have the same voice actor.
